The wettest lower component may only be catching oil from above. Oil level, fresh leakage and the engine’s crankcase-ventilation condition help define the actual repair.
A dark or amber spot suggests engine oil, but appearance changes with age, dust and contamination. Gearbox or differential lubricant, coolant, power-system fluids on older configurations, fuel and harmless air-conditioning water can all appear beneath a vehicle. A new drop after a journey may be oil draining from an undertray. Note whether it returns after each trip and whether the parking surface slopes.
Heat and operating conditions can make a small leak easier to see. Report whether the smell or smoke appears at idle, after acceleration or after switching off.

Upper engine

Crankcase ventilation
Connected cause: abnormal pressure can aggravate leaks at otherwise serviceable seals. The ventilation layout and test method differ across engine families, so a universal PCV diagnosis is inappropriate.

Cleaning alone is not a repair, and dye alone is not proof. The evidence becomes useful when fresh oil returns from a specific joint or component under controlled observation. If two sources are active, they are prioritised by severity and accessibility rather than being described as one failure.

A gasket or seal that has lost its sealing function is normally replaced. A damaged housing, warped cover, worn crankshaft surface, stripped drain thread or cracked pan may require a different component. If a fitting is loose because of incorrect previous work, the mating surfaces and threads still need assessment before tightening or resealing.
Connected parts are quoted separately when findings justify them. These can include a complete cover with an integrated ventilation valve, filter or cooler housing, one-time bolts, oil-contaminated belt, damaged undertray, turbo oil pipe, oil-level sensor seal, seal carrier or engine oil and filter required by the procedure. None is automatically included on every Audi.
Light historic dampness with a stable level may be cleaned and monitored. An active leak near a belt, hot exhaust, engine mount or electrical component deserves faster repair. Major dismantling, such as access to the rear crankshaft seal or timing cover, needs stronger confirmation than a readily visible upper gasket.

Do not work under a car supported only by a jack. Stop-leak additives cannot identify the source and may alter seal or oil behaviour. The correct oil specification also varies; do not assume one viscosity or approval applies to all Audi engines.

An Audi A3 with a transverse engine has a different leak map and access pattern from a longitudinal A4, A6 or Q-series configuration. Hybrid models add high-voltage safety and packaging considerations.
Model names span generations and engine families, so “A4 oil leak” is not a part number. A fully electric e-tron does not have engine oil; a reported leak on one must be classified by the systems actually fitted.

Reduce avoidable leak risks
Use oil that meets the approval specified for the exact engine, keep the level within the permitted range and investigate repeated top-ups instead of normalising them. Ensure filters, caps and drain hardware are fitted correctly during service. Attend to crankcase-ventilation faults and overheating promptly. Periodic inspection of the undertray and upper engine can catch a small fresh trace before it spreads, but there is no universal replacement interval for all Audi gaskets and seals.
There is no single mileage at which every seal must be changed. At routine service, ask for fresh leakage to be distinguished from old staining and recorded against its location. If you repeatedly add oil without visible leakage, explain that history: oil consumption can require a separate investigation. Increasing the viscosity, overfilling or hiding the stain with cleaning does not establish why the oil level is changing.

Can oil at the bottom of the engine come from above?
Yes. Oil can travel down covers, follow casting ribs and move rearward with airflow. Undertrays spread it further. The highest fresh wet point after cleaning is usually more useful than the lowest drip. A drip below the engine–gearbox joint needs particular care because oil from upper components can reach the same area.
Is a small Audi oil leak safe to drive with?
Only conditionally. A light trace with a stable level and no warning or smoke may allow a short inspection trip.
