Coolant color is not a diagnosis. Fluid can be mixed, aged or contaminated, and leaked coolant can travel from another component. The source should be traced before a part is named.

Never open a hot pressurized cooling system

Opening the expansion tank or cooling-system cap when hot can release pressurized coolant and steam. Allow the system to cool before inspection or topping up. If overheating is active, continuing to drive can turn a repairable cooling fault into more serious engine damage.

How we locate a coolant leak

1. Inspect cold. Check coolant level and condition, radiator end tanks/core, hoses, quick-connects, expansion tank, cap area, thermostat housing, water-pump area and visible coolant tracks.
2. Pressure-test when appropriate. A controlled cooling-system pressure test can expose many external leaks that are too small to see at rest.
3. Inspect operating behavior. Some leaks or circulation faults appear only as temperature and pressure change. Hot inspection is performed only with appropriate safety precautions.
4. Check thermostat and circulation. Temperature data and component behavior help distinguish a stuck/incorrectly operating thermostat or circulation problem from a radiator leak.
5. Check water-pump function and leakage. Mechanical or electric pump design varies by engine. The pump is evaluated according to the exact powertrain rather than assumed from an overheating symptom.
6. Check cooling fans and control. Fan operation, command, wiring and control faults matter especially when overheating appears at low road speed or with AC load.
7. Consider internal leakage only when evidence supports it. If external testing does not explain coolant loss or pressure behavior, combustion-gas, oil/coolant cross-contamination or other internal-engine checks may be justified.
An external pressure test is useful but does not prove that every possible internal cooling-system fault is absent. Diagnosis follows the symptom pattern and evidence.

Radiator repair or replacement needs radiator-specific evidence

External leak

A confirmed leak from the radiator core, end tank, seam, neck or integral fitting can justify radiator replacement or an appropriate repair where the component design and damage support it.

Impact damage

Road debris or collision damage can bend fins, puncture the core or damage mounts. The condenser and nearby cooling stack are checked because more than one heat exchanger can be affected.

Restricted heat transfer

External blockage or internal restriction can reduce cooling performance, but the diagnosis should distinguish airflow restriction from thermostat, pump, fan or engine faults before replacement.

Not every hose leak is a radiator failure

A hose, connector, flange, drain point or cap issue should be repaired as its own confirmed fault. It should not be turned into a radiator replacement merely because coolant is visible nearby.

Coolant selection is based on the exact vehicle specification and compatible approved fluid, not color alone. Different coolant technologies should not be mixed simply because they look similar. The correct concentration and refill procedure depend on the product and vehicle requirements.

No generic “distilled water plus antifreeze” rule

Some products are supplied premixed and others are concentrates. The service procedure and coolant product determine whether and how water is used.

No universal 30,000 km flush interval

Coolant service intervals vary by vehicle, fluid and maintenance program. A flush is not automatically required every time a radiator or hose is repaired unless contamination, fluid condition or the applicable procedure justifies it.

Combustion and hybrid vehicles

Depending on the powertrain, there can be separate or interacting engine, turbocharger, charge-air, transmission and hybrid thermal circuits. The radiator being discussed must be identified from the exact vehicle.

Battery-electric e-tron vehicles

Battery-electric Audis use thermal-management systems that differ from a conventional engine-cooling layout and can include multiple coolant circuits for the battery, motors, power electronics and cabin conditioning. High-voltage-related thermal work follows the applicable vehicle procedure and should not be described as a generic “engine radiator” repair.

What radiator replacement includes when it is actually needed

1. Confirm the exact radiator and cooling configuration. Use VIN/application and fitted equipment where needed because radiator dimensions, ports, sensors and cooling-stack layout can vary.
2. Correct the failure cause. A damaged fan, failed mount, contamination or another related fault should not be left to damage or compromise the replacement part.
3. Replace required seals and damaged connections. Hoses, O-rings, clips, mounts and related parts are handled according to condition and the applicable procedure.
4. Refill with the correct coolant. Use the specified coolant and filling method. Vacuum filling or a defined bleed procedure is used when applicable to the exact system.
5. Verify pressure and leakage. Check repaired joints and the cooling system for leakage after refill and operating temperature where appropriate.
6. Verify thermal control. Confirm plausible temperature behavior, thermostat/water-pump operation where relevant, fan function and absence of the original symptom before handover.

Does overheating mean my Audi radiator is bad?

No. The radiator is one possible cause. Low coolant, thermostat, water pump, cooling fan, airflow, internal leakage and other faults can produce overheating. Diagnosis should identify the cause before radiator replacement.

Can a pressure test find every coolant leak?

It is very useful for many external leaks, but not every internal or operating-condition fault is proven by one pressure test. Additional testing depends on the symptom and evidence.

Should the coolant be flushed every 30,000 km?

Not as a universal Audi rule. Use the service requirements for the exact vehicle and fluid. A repair may require refill or replacement of coolant, but a scheduled flush interval should not be invented.

What coolant should an Audi use?
